Thank you, Team Guyana, for showing Guyana’s mettle to the world

The Ministry of Public Telecommunications (MOPT) heartily congratulates the team of eight (8) youthful, budding Guyanese Technology Engineers for fighting against many odds and coming out of the 2019 Global Robotics tournament holding strongly to their 39th place in a field of 190 competitors.  The First Global Robotic competition was held over three days in Dubai, UAE.

According to STEM Guyana, the local ICT experts responsible for selection, mentoring and training, this young team overcame strong logistical odds, showed remarkable resilience, and ended the world tournament in the top 25 percent in the world rankings.

The MOPT has been partnering with STEM Guyana since 2016 when Guyana’s evolution towards a digitized nation gained serious momentum.  STEM Guyana has since attracted partners in other governmental agencies as well as non-governmental organizations.

Since then, and in keeping with the national objective to ensure that Guyana’s children have access to every available facility to become tech-savvy, Minister Catherine Hughes has been presenting Robotic Kits with workbooks, stationary and other materials to STEMGuyana, to Robotic Clubs in Primary and Secondary schools, community groups and Libraries.  Team Guyana comprised youths from Hague, WCD, Timehri, L/S Highway, Enmore ECD, and communities in Georgetown.

STEM Guyana’s partnership with MOPT also allowed the team of Robotics tutors to utilize Community ICT hubs, which the Ministry has equipped with Wi-Fi connections and computers, for training.

STEM Guyana said that Team Guyana and their “community of mentors and supporters contributed to the design of a superior machine, proving to the world that a tiny country … could compete favourably against youths from wealthy nations with access to more resources”.

Guyana’s youths are indeed the nation’s future and we are proud.
