ICT a tool to educate and empower – Min. Hughes

“You have more power at your fingertips than entire generations who came before you… the future of Guyana, depends more and more on you, our young people, and your ability to learn and utilize every facet of ICT.”

Minister of Public Telecommunications, Catherine Hughes has given encouragement to young women in the town of Linden, urging them to utilize ICTs educate and empower themselves.

“You have more power at your fingertips than entire generations who came before you. Technology is a possibility; it is adaptable; it is capable, but it’s only a tool. It’s not about what technology can do, it’s about what you can do with it.”

The minister was at the time addressing participants at the Girl Stand Up Empowerment camp in Linden town which was aimed at equipping young women with developmental skills to build confidence and self-esteem. Education, she said, is a crucial tool to truly empower oneself.

She stated: “The future of Guyana, the future of the world depends more and more on you, our young people, and your ability to learn and utilize every facet of ICT”. She then expressed her belief that young people naturally possess ICT skills.

The young women were urged to make use of the internet to educate themselves since “a world of information is within your reach”. Minister Hughes also warned them of the dangers lurking online, and cautioned the young women to use it wisely.
